You as a Systems Engineer will build, configure, maintain and troubleshoot a wide variety of systems and services. This is an exciting role working within our Systems Engineering team which works closely with our Service Desk, Network Operations, Project Management, and commercial departments. You will be joining a friendly, skilled team with a large amount of experience in the data centre and managed services industry; this position will be an opportunity for career development in a growing, forward-thinking organisation.

 

The role of a Systems Engineer means you must be highly motivated, you will be able to work autonomously and would also be expected to mentor less experienced/knowledgeable colleagues. You will have excellent written and verbal skills and be expected to produce documentation to a high standard. You will be expected to interact with peers and customers alike either gathering information, working on design installation of projects and troubleshooting complex issues. You will have strong time management and reporting abilities.

 

You would be working with a wide variety of technologies and products hosted in privately owned Data centres as well as utilising Public Cloud infrastructure. You should primarily be highly skilled in supporting a mix of Windows, Linux and Solaris operating systems. Public Cloud and Virtualisation experience be advantageous. You will also be expected to take part in our on-call rota supporting the estate and reporting back to the incident management team. It is also essential you have a driving licence and be willing to undertake work on brightsolid and customer sites throughout the UK.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure
  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools
  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes
  • Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies
  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
  • Participate in the design of information and operational support systems
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd level support
  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
  • Build and configure systems as designed for internal and customer projects
  • Take responsibility for any assigned projects
  • Liaise with customers and other areas of the business to gather and implement solutions
  • 3rd line supporting existing customer infrastructures across multiple sites
  • Create, risk assess and execute Change Requests
  • Produce work proposals and document any work undertaken
  • Developing other team members
  • Out of Hours OnCall support

 

Skills

 

Essential Requirements

Configuration and troubleshooting of the following technologies:

  • Solaris is a must
  • Linux e.g. Redhat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu
  • Virtualization e.g. Hyper-V, VMware
  • Backup and recovery, e.g. Veeam, CommVault, Asigra
  • Ensures that all work is compliant and consistent with the needs of our Information Security Management (ISMS – 27001 : 2013) and Business Continuity Systems
  • Exchange administrator
  • Relevant current certification

 

Desirable Requirements

  • Recognised IT certifications
  • Windows Server operating systems 2008-current
  • Backup technologies, e.g. Veeam, CommVault
  • AWS & Azure Architecture and implementation knowledge
  • Python or PowerShell Scripting
  • Automation and orchestration
  • Good knowledge of networking principles
  • Storage, enterprise SAN, FC and iSCSI
  • Dell and Cisco UCS hardware support
